A Henry man has taken to the road in an unorthodox method of traveling by mule and wagon. His destination is Phoenix, Az.
As part of his southerly route, John McComsey traveled through Weakley County on Thursday before stopping overnight in Union City. McComsey’s three-year plan to travel by wagon using two mules was put into motion Wednesday as he left his hometown of Henry.
McComsey officially retired March 1 and said he has planned a trip to Arizona to visit his sister. His route will take him through Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas and New Mexico before reaching his destination in Phoenix, Az.
After working as a handyman, McComsey took a handful of trips by wagon to Alabama. That is what inspired him to make a three to four-month journey to the Southwest.
His wagon is equipped with headlights, turn signals and a strobe light. His plan is to rest during the afternoon heat and travel at night.
The wagon that will be used as his resting quarters has a radio, bathroom vanity, a water heater and a shower. McComsey also has a mattress in the wagon.
His mules, Mack and Jack, have been his companions for the past three years. McComsey purchased the pair of Percheron draft mules in Kentucky. He has trained them to pull his two wagons.
While the mules are leading the way, McComsey is not traveling alone. He will have his Blue Tick Heeler, Brit, at his side throughout the trip.
McComsey also carries his laptop to provide updates about his trip on his Web page. He said he expects to be in Arizona sometime in July and from there, he will rest a few weeks before deciding his next move.
With nothing better to do, according to McComsey, he said he has no intentions of becoming famous using his method of travel.
It’s just the peaceful pace of life while soaking in the scenery that leaves McComsey’s favored method of travel by mules and a wagon. Follow him on his journey at www.twomulesandawagon.com.
