Milan, Camden can’t slow Lady Yellowjackets’ roll
Milan, Camden can’t slow Lady Yellowjackets’ roll | Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets, tennis UT Martin, Katie McCall,

The wins continued to pile up for the undefeated Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets tennis team.
The girls from Greenfield stretched their season-opening win streak to eight with victories over Camden on Monday at Skyhawk Courts and over Milan on Tuesday on the road.
The Lady Jackets took the season sweep of Camden by downing the visiting Lady Lions, 6-1, then whitewashed a tough Milan  Lady Bulldog squad, winning 7-0.
“I was proud of our team today and especially proud of our top seven players. Milan always has a tough team and always is well coached. Our starters did a good job of staying focused on the match. We actually played one of the best matches we have played all season, which is what we needed to do today,” GHS tennis coach Bill McCall said. “Some of our beginners had an opportunity to play their first high school tennis match. I thought these young players did a great job and handled themselves very well. The experience will help them grow and be better players in the future.”
On a beautiful spring afternoon, the Lady Jackets made quick work of Milan, breezing to easy wins in most matches.
Greenfield picked up 8-0 wins at No. 2 singles where Mallory Robinson whipped  Betty Kay Stinson and at No. 1 doubles where Haley Perkins and Katie McCall blanked Betty Kay Stinson and Kayla Hernandez.
In a match-up of future OVC foes at No. 1 singles, McCall, a UT Martin signee, earned an 8-1 victory over Milan’s Kristen Garcia, a Murray State signee.
Greenfield got 8-1 wins at No. 3 singles where Haley Perkins played a strong match with few errors and beat Kayla Hernandez, and at No. 4 singles where Meagan Porter played steady and pinned a loss on Milan’s Leah Watson. The margin of 8-1 also went Greenfield’s way at No. 2 doubles where the duo of Robinson and Porter also handily won their match with Mary Jo Stinson and Emmy Merrit.
At No. 5 singles, GHS freshman Emily Allen outplayed Milan’s Mary Jo Stinson to win, 8-2.
Several of Greenfield’s young players had the opportunity to gain some experience against Milan by playing in their first singles match. These matches had no bearing on the final team score. Greenfield’s McCall Scates took four games from her more experienced opponent, Emily Atkins of Milan, before finally losing, 6-4. Lady Jacket Kaylee Kesterson came from being down 4-2 to upset Sarah McKinny of Milan 7-5. Kendall Cook from GHS played tough and won two games from her opponent, Ashley Wood, before losing a 6-2 decision. Greenfield’s Sofia Oliva also got two games off her more experienced opponent Sarah McKinny but lost, 6-2. Scates, Kesterson, Cook, and Oliva are all eighth-graders playing their first high school tennis matches.
In a doubles match involving first-year Greenfield players, Ashton Pence and Callie Croom played against Milan’s No. 6 and No. 7 players and managed to win four games in a close 6-4 loss.
On Monday against Camden, the weather conditions were less tennis-friendly, but the final outcome was just as pleasant for GHS. Greenfield took its second win of the season from Camden, winning 6-1.
In a tight match at No. 2 singles, Robinson and Camden’s Bethany Weston were knotted at 4-4 mid way through their match before Robinson turned up the heat and the focus. The Lady Jacket senior won out to take the 8-4 victory.
At No. 1 singles, McCall shut out Kelly Arnold, 8-0.
At No. 3 singles, Greenfield’s Perkins and Camden’s Desiree Douglas played nearly every game to deuce before Douglas took the 8-4 win.
At No. 4 singles, Porter played nearly error-free to win, 8-2, over Lana Phillips. At No. 5 singles, Allen extended her string of strong matches by winning, 8-4, over Kristen Ragon.
In doubles, at No. 1, McCall and Perkins shut out Arnold and Weston, 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, Robinson and Porter knocked off Douglas and Ragon, 8-2.
In exhibition matches, No. 6 singles, Hannah Mosely fell to Camden’s Haley Hayes, 8-5. GHS sophomore Taylor Hatcher gained some revenge for a loss earlier this season, defeating Camden’s No. 7 singles competitor, Allie Daniel, 8-0. Daniel nipped Hatcher, 9-7, in their earlier meeting.
At No. 8 singles, GHS freshman Callie Croom stopped Camden’s Erin Wheatley, 8-0.
In doubles exhibition play, the GHS pair of Mosely and Allen beat Rezek and Howe, 8-2.
The Lady Jackets’ scheduled match against Gibson County set for Wednesday was cancelled. Greenfield’s tennis team will next play at home against Milan today (Thursday) at Skyhawk Courts.
